This steel bridge, built between 1902–1903, is one of the oldest truss bridges in Wuppertal.

Until 1929, the bridge was the border between the two then independent cities of Barmen and Elberfeld. In the Middle Ages there was a ford in the Wupper at the same location. Next to the ford on the southern side of the Wupper was the Furter Hof, mentioned in 1466; The street Furter Hof is a reminder of him today. The Elberfelder Landwehr ran from Ostersbaum over the Hardtberg to the southern heights. There is evidence that a turnstile (= “Haspel”) existed at the ford in the 16th century. This narrow passage for pedestrians in the Landwehr led to the naming.

In 1729 the first stone bridge was destroyed by ice. During the Seven Years' War in 1759 there were battles between the French and the general Ferdinand Hereditary Prince of Braunschweig. During the First Coalition War in 1796, the bridge was again the scene of conflict between French and Prussians. The Prussian lieutenant von Hakke was able to get the French general Jean-Baptiste Jourdan to move the demarcation line a little to the west to the Haspeler Bridge.

There is an anecdote associated with this bridge (probably a predecessor to the current construction). During his visit in October 1900, Kaiser Wilhelm II is said to have said to his wife during the carriage ride from the Barmer to the Elberfeld side: “Auguste, put your hat on, we are coming to the city!” Another version is: “Gustchen, sit Hats straight, we’re coming into town now.” This still annoys many a barman today. It is unclear how this alleged quote was passed down, as it is doubted that this carriage ride took place.
