In the summer of 1872, a sandstone obelisk was erected on Werderplatz to commemorate the conquest of Strasbourg. The monument was designed by the Edenkoben sculptor Kleindienst. After the victory monument was planned, the Strasbourg stone was moved to the edge of the former quarry.
