Strolling through Jacobi Park in Hamburg-Eilbek, one notices individual gravestones and monuments scattered throughout the park. They bear witness to the past of today's green space as the former cemetery of the Jacobi congregation.

It was established in 1848 by the main church of St. Jacobi, located in Hamburg's city center – but at a completely unusual distance, at that time still four kilometers
from the city. This may be why its popularity grew slowly over time. Until its deconsecration in 1954, it remained unchanged with a multitude of gravestones.

Afterward, the cemetery became a public green space with a pond landscape, park meadow, quiet garden, playground, and even a bird sanctuary. It has retained its romantic character to this day.

The former cemetery has disappeared, but a total of five gravestones and two crypt structures from the 19th century were left standing at their original locations.

The park is a historical green space of significant garden preservation.

In 1848, this park was laid out as a cemetery and chapel far outside the gates of what was then Hamburg. After the cemetery Ohlsdorf was completed, the burials were initially restricted here and from 1934 all set. Today it is a beautiful garden park located off the Wandsbeker Chaussee, which still houses 8 grave monuments.

Beautiful landscaped park that used to be a cemetery area, with some monuments, gravestones and graves still in place.
