The gasworks (Osterbekstrasse today's Alster-City), the rubber works (Tretorn), the E factory on Flotow Strasse, the Kampnägel factory and a waste incineration plant on the Dulsberg were located on the Osterbek Canal. The earth created during construction was used to build the railway embankments for the light railway, the elevated railway and the freight bypass railway. In the upper part of the canal, a branch leads via the Barmbek canal to the Stadtparksee, which is also connected to the Outer Alster via the Goldbek canal.
