The Arsenali Center of Mediterranean Architecture is an esteemed institution, administered by the Municipality of Chania. It is housed in a building called Megalo Neorio, alias the Grand Arsenal. Completed in 1600, this was the last of a series of shipyards constructed by the Venetians in the 15th and 16th centuries. In the late 19th century, it was used as a school of the Christian community, while, during the Second World War, it was badly damaged as a result of bombings.

The construction of the “Great Arsenal” began between 1585 and 1600.
Over the years it housed the Christian Community School (1872), numerous
Theater performances (1892), the public hospital (1923) and the town hall (1928 – 1941).
To date, it has been transformed from an exposed ruin into an impressive venue for events and exhibitions.
