From the parking lot (reachable via a long gravel road) (3 €), it goes down about 150 m over 1.5 km to Balos beach! Here a beautiful sandy beach and lots of other tourists await you - and unfortunately also very strong wind that pushed directly into the bay, which considerably reduced the beach fun

The bus departs from Paleochora daily at 7:00 AM (buy your ticket the day before) to the upper entrance of the Samaria Gorge. Between 8:30 AM and 9:00 AM, buses from all over Crete arrive here and unload the hikers, who then make their way through the gorge to the sea.

We went up the mandatory path to the Alpspitz (from where there is a really great view) and then escaped the crowds and went on a nice little circular route over the Edelsberg, the Dinserhütte and the Fichtelhütte (there it was more like hiking than going up to the Alpspitz and much fewer people)
