        The aviator memorial was erected for six aviators who were killed in the crash of a giant Linke-Hofmann R.I (R14) aircraft on August 19, 1917 near Halberstadt.

        They belonged to the giant aircraft division 500 and had taken off from Halberstadt airfield.
