In 2014, the First World War, which broke out 100 years ago, will be commemorated all over the country. 40 states were involved in this war, in which a total of around 70 million soldiers were under arms. Until the start of the Second World War in 1938, it was the most extensive war in human history. The First World War claimed almost ten million lives and around 20 million wounded among the soldiers. The number of civilian casualties is estimated at a further seven million. To this day, this war is not interpreted uniformly by the various warring parties. The First World War went down in military history as trench and positional warfare, but above all as a gas war, because weapons of mass destruction were used for the first time. The Harz region was not involved in this fighting. However, it was involved in the war. The town of Halberstadt was a garrison town from 1623 and developed over the centuries into one of the most important in Central Germany.

This long period of military presence, which only ended in 1993 with the withdrawal of the Soviet army, has left numerous regional traces.

This includes the Meding Schanze, a relic of the First World War, which has, however, been largely forgotten.

This war memorial is located off the well-known hiking trails in the Spiegelsberge.

You can find it if you follow the zoo fence at the Spiegelsberge hunting lodge and take the road down to the left towards Lindenberg.

In the First World War a training area, in the Weimar Republic a place of remembrance, then filled in and reconstructed as an ABM measure after the fall of the Wall, the Medingschanze is now in danger again - instead of being overgrown by nature as a warning against the war.
