The altar is the monastery's most valuable art possessions and one of the most important works of art of the Middle Ages. The work was completed in 1181 after around ten years of work. It originally decorated the pulpit parapet in the collegiate church. After a fire in 1330, the work was converted into a winged altar and took on its current form. The altar includes a total of 51 enamel panels, which are arranged in three horizontal zones and correspond to the eras of salvation history.
