Flensburg merchants' courtyards - or how Columbus discovered rum
Just as marzipan represents Lübeck or bratwurst represents Nuremberg, Flensburg is commonly associated with beer and "points". But it is not so common knowledge that Flensburg is also a rum city. Flensburg was the center of the rum trade.
In the heyday of the West Indies trade, the cargo sailing ships of the Danish West Indies fleet, which had their main port in the then Danish Flensburg in the 18th century, mainly brought brown raw sugar and raw rum from the Caribbean.
