Cycling

The crossing of the Rhine near Nierstein in 1945 by American troops was a key operation on the western front in the final phase of the Second World War. Starting from Nierstein, 18 km south of Mainz, in present-day Rhineland-Palatinate, several hundred American infantrymen crossed the Rhine to southern Hesse and built bridges over which 60,000 vehicles were subsequently translated for further occupation of the German Reich.
