Until the 19th century, the pillory or 'kak' stood on the market square in many northern European cities. In many cases there was a wood-carved figure on it to remind citizens to obey the law.

The pillory of the city of Tondern was a brick column on a stone foundation. The figure of the 'Kakmannes' or 'Büttels' either stood on or next to the pillory. Here the perpetrators were denounced or, in serious cases, whipped and chased out of the city.

The crimes that gave rise to public flogging were often minor. In 1813 an apprentice cobbler was caught stealing apples. As a punishment, he should be publicly flogged and stand in the pillory for an hour. In this case, however, mercy was granted and the sentence was changed to three days in prison with bread and water.
It was a different story for a young woman who had committed a petty theft in 1865. She was publicly flogged and had to leave the city.
The last pillory figure was erected in 1699 and is now in the Tonderner Museum - the only one of its kind still preserved in Denmark and an impressive testimony to the legal concept of the past. Eight men and six horses were needed to drag the heavy oak trunk to the wood carver, who carved a ducal profos (civil servant who carried out all penalties except death) from it.
The figure in the small market where the pillory used to stand is a faithful copy of this ducal professor. It was given to the city on its 750th anniversary in 1993.
