The still visible anti-tank ditch in the Asserbos was dug by order of the German occupier. The Frieslandriegel was a more than a hundred kilometer long anti-tank ditch that ran from Zwolle to Delfzijl. At the end of the war, the Germans were afraid of an Allied invasion from the west.
