The still visible anti-tank ditch in the Asserbos was dug by order of the German occupier. Part of a major military operation and intended to form an additional obstacle for the Allied troops and their equipment. In vain. On Friday, April 13, 1945, the liberation rolled into Assen. Including via the Beilerstraat.

The Frieslandriegel was a more than a hundred kilometer long anti-tank ditch that ran from Zwolle to Delfzijl. At the end of the war, the Germans were afraid of an Allied invasion from the west. There was already a defense line from Switzerland to Zwolle, but the Allies could bypass it by passing through Drenthe and Groningen.
