Within the Amelterbos forest, between Steendijk and Vredeveldseweg, lies the historic Valkenstijn estate. A magnificent country house once stood there, but it fell into disrepair and was demolished in the 1960s. A grave monument over a hundred years old still commemorates the last residents, Augustinus and Louise van Valkenstijn. On the edge of Valkenstijn, there is also a children's farm serving the Assen-Oost district.
