During the war, the Nazis cleared a large area of land in the Ringheim Forest to build an airfield under the code name "Schafweide". In the adjacent forest, fully assembled aircraft were parked in a wide variety of locations, guarded by a few soldiers. From around 9/1943, the bunker on the site was used as an experimental workshop by Leipzig professor Schiebold, who wanted to develop a method of shooting down enemy aircraft using concentrated X-rays in a project of the highest secrecy. The events surrounding this research are extremely mysterious. In any case, Schiebold and his colleagues avoided being deployed to the front. Schiebold's opponents, who believed the project had no chance of success, ensured that the Nazi government ended it in September 1944. The bunker is now a cultural site. Bunker tours are possible on selected dates and also as private tours: bunker-ringheim.de

Today, the large hub of a logistics company is located between Schaafheim and Ringheim. Behind it is a quartz sand mining operation. For decades, it has covered part of the regional sand demand and has only grown slightly. Now it has become part of a large corporation. This company plans (as of 2024) to expand mining significantly. There is a threat of mining the entire area from the road to Ringheim to the road to Babenhausen up to close to the town border (5m) and up to the forest, and at depths of around 20m. A citizens' initiative is fighting against the mining plans.

All the views on this tour today were wonderful thanks to the bright yellow rapeseed fields.
