Durlach's Town Church is a Protestant hall church whose origins date back to the 13th century. It was rebuilt several times over the centuries and received its current Baroque appearance in 1701.

During the founding of the town by the Hohenstaufen dynasty (1192–1196), a small Romanesque church with a 20-meter-long nave was built. The current floor plan dates back to around 1530.

The Protestant town church of Durlach, right next to the town hall, received its current baroque appearance in 1701. However, the origins of the hall church go back to a building from the 13th century.

The founding of Durlach in the late 12th century was accompanied by the construction of a Romanesque church, of which the lower part of the west tower, with round-arch entrances on the south and north sides and coupled windows, still survives today. Adjoining the east side was a flat-roofed, single-aisled nave of approximately 20 meters, the remains of whose northern outer wall still exist. At the beginning of the 15th century, the church, dedicated to St. Stephen since the 13th century, was rebuilt and expanded in the Gothic style. Of the newly designed three-aisled nave, however, only the central nave with the long choir projecting to the east and ending in an apsidal, and the northern aisle were completed. In addition, the rectangular west tower received an octagonal tower superstructure with a spire. Because the southern aisle was not completed, a chapel with a polygonal eastern end, the so-called Holy Cross Chapel, was added to the south side of the long choir (before 1460). At the conclusion of the extensive construction work, the patronage in honor of Saint Stephen was renewed in 1464. The last major change before the city fire of 1689 took place around 1530, when the two-aisled nave was expanded to the south and east, at the expense of the Holy Cross Chapel and the western part of the long choir, into a spacious three-aisled hall church.
