In the Middle Ages, Tongeren came into the sights of the Duchy of Brabant. Due to frequent attacks and the dilapidated state of the 4th-century Roman wall, there was an urgent need for a new city wall. Construction started in 1241 and lasted no less than 50 years.

The new medieval wall with 6 city gates and 13 towers walled a city area of 54 hectares - that is about 100 football fields. The best preserved parts can be found along the Elfde Novemberwal and the Leopoldwal.
