The "Fat Mary" is the oldest of the three large city churches in Greifswald. It dominates the skyline of the city of Greifswald and can be seen from afar. It is a stop on the European Route of Brick Gothic. The church is open to the public and can be visited. The opening times can be found on the parish website. Guided tours can also be booked. A tour of the church tower is only possible as part of a guided tour. Inside the church, the Chapel of St Mary is a space of silence for reflection and contemplation. Outside the church, the newly designed green area on the south side invites you to take a stroll.

The St. Marien Church is one of the largest north German hall churches, it shapes the silhouette of the university and Hanseatic city of Greifswald and is a stop on the European route of brick Gothic along the Baltic Sea coast. The building impresses with its size and clarity, its subtle colors and its valuable inventory items.
The church is popularly known as "Fat Marie".
