Lusatian granite stretches from house to house over 11,000 square meters like a "finely woven carpet". The design of the market was the result of an architectural competition that was announced in the mid-1990s and whose winning design was completed on the occasion of the city's 750th anniversary. The Gothic residential granaries, the town houses with their multi-colored facades on the north side, the town hall and the old town pharmacy had already been renovated at this time. They provide an effective setting for the market with its inviting street cafés. In 2014, the city administration moved into the Prussian post office building, which opened in 1886. Trade was already being conducted on this square in the 13th century.
