The existence of a Greifswald university library has been documented since 1604. The collections were housed in numerous teaching buildings, and later also in what is now the auditorium of the main university building. From 1880 to 1882, the library building on Rubenowstrasse was built according to plans by the architects Martin Gropius (1824-1880) and Heino Schmieden (1835-1913).
Today, numerous special collections are kept in the “Old Library”, including the “Pomeranica”, which includes 30,000 volumes with content related to Pomerania, the “Old Book” collection with works from the beginnings of printing up to 1850, and the history specialist library. The reading room has 35 seats.
