The existence of a Greifswald University Library has been documented since 1604. The collections were housed in numerous teaching buildings, later including the current auditorium of the university's main building. From 1880 to 1882, the library building on Rubenowstraße was constructed according to plans by the architects Martin Gropius (1824-1880) and Heino Schmieden (1835-1913).
Today, the "Old Library" houses numerous special collections, including the "Pomeranica," comprising 30,000 volumes related to Pomerania, the "Old Book" collection with works from the beginnings of printing to 1850, and the History Library. The reading room has 35 seats.
