The station was built between 1996 and 1998, while the railway remained in operation, according to plans by the architectural firm Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp), a renowned transport architecture firm. Its design harks back to classic railway architecture with its striking glass barrel roofs, which, with a length of 432 meters, completely cover the platforms. A simple platform tunnel, parallel to the equally new road crossing at Spandau Station, provides access to the platforms next to the concourse under the tracks on Klosterstraße. The concourse is 16 meters wide.
