The cathedral square, which stretches between the cathedral and the Liebfrauenkirche, is one of those places in the city that were not affected by the war devastation in the Second World War. It was the religious center of Halberstadt, which is why there are hardly any shops here. Even a largely preserved own wall blocked off the entire, significantly elevated area and called Domburg from the rest of the city.

Even from afar, impressive sacred buildings characterize the silhouette of the former bishop's town on the northern edge of the Harz Mountains.
The focal point of the historic center is the extensive cathedral square with its impressive ensemble of magnificent cathedrals of St. Stephen and St. Sixtus and the Romanesque Church of Our Lady. The cathedral, built according to the French model, is considered one of the finest Gothic cathedrals in Germany. With more than 600 treasures from several centuries, the cathedral treasury is one of the most exquisite church treasures in the world.
At the foot of the cathedral, the historic old town is waiting to be discovered. Winding alleys, cobblestones and Butzenglas: Halberstadt enchants with the charm of its half-timbered architecture. The oldest houses date from the 16th century. Traces of the once large Jewish community in Halberstadt, one of the largest in all of Central Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries, are still revealed to the attentive observer below the former bishop's palace.
Halberstadt surprises with its diverse cultural landscape, numerous museums and its varied calendar of events. In the Gleimhaus, one of the oldest literature museums in Germany, the Age of Enlightenment comes alive again through the impressive collection of books, letters and portraits of its namesake, Johann Wilhelm Ludwig Gleim. The municipal museum provides deep insights into the eventful history of the cathedral city and the Heineanum ornithological museum is certainly an experience for nature lovers. The screw museum presents the bourgeois living culture around 1900 and the Berend Lehmann Museum preserves the memory of the centuries-old tradition of the former Jewish community in Halberstadt.
Lovers of drama, ballet, opera and symphony concerts will get their money's worth in the North Harz City Theater. A special musical feature is probably the most unusual art project in organ history: the tones of the John Cage organ art project "ORGAN²/ASLSP" have been heard in the Buchardi Church since the turn of the millennium, which is to be played for a total of 639 years.Source: harzinfo.de/urlaubsorte/halberstadt
