Since the Reformation, there have been no Catholic congregations in Estonia. In 1799, the refectory of the former Dominican monastery of St. Catherine was given to the predominantly Polish Catholics in Tallinn as a place of worship. After the congregation had grown to more than 1,500 members, the conversion of the monastery building into the present church began. The façade was not completed in its current form until 1920, after a lower convent building adjoining it was demolished.
