The decanal St. Trudo Church has a long history that is closely linked to the history of Peer. The church is dominated by its imposing Gothic tower.
It is believed that the first parish church within the extensive area 'Ochsinala' (which in addition to Peer also includes Eksel, Neerpelt, Brogel, Erpekom, Wijchmaal, Peer and Helchteren) was founded in Peer. This first church is the only church mentioned in a diploma from Pope Paschal II, who ratified the privileges and possessions of the abbey of Sint-Truiden in 1107.

Presumably a wooden church was built on this site around 950, which was later made of fieldstone. During the 11th century a new church was built, of which a small part has probably been preserved in a wall on the east side. Construction of the tower is said to have started in 1392 and was completed before 1422. It is one of the largest towers in Limburg (64m) and hence got its name "Giant of the Kempen". The heavy tower, which was part of the city walls, was also used as a refuge for the citizens in case of trouble. On 21 July 1825 the so-called "mosquito fire" took place in the tower, in which the people of Peren mistook a dense swarm of mosquitoes for smoke and put it out with all their might, which is where their nickname "mosquito extinguishers" comes from.
