One of the three entrances (at least that I counted) to the Schuilenswijer nature reserve. A small nature reserve where two streams have their sources and where nature restoration has provided many species, read for yourself: natuurpunt.be/nieuws/schuilenswijer-dommelvallei-paradijs-voor-vlinders-lidelen-en-vogels- thanks-nature restoration

Schuilenswijer is named after the fish breeding pond from the eighteenth century of the Schuilens family that was located here. After drainage, agriculture was practiced. In 2011, Natuurpunt, Peer and Hechtel-Eksel joined forces to restore water management.

The area is now home to more than 30 species of butterflies, more than 30 species of dragonflies and more than 75 species of birds. Water management ensures that the eggs of amphibians and larvae are not eaten by fish. From September onwards the lock is opened and most of the water is released.

More on the signs with the photos, also about the grazers that you find here in the appropriate seasons.

Schuilenswijer in the Dommelvallei has received a real makeover since 2011. At the time that Natuurpunt took over a monotonous grassland and a roughened field under management through a lease with the city of Peer and the municipality of Hechtel-Eksel, it was a natural desert. The grassland had been artificially leveled and was intersected by a deep ditch.
With European subsidies from the LIFE Fund, volunteers from the Hechtel-Eksel Nature Point department and the social employment team from Nature and Landscape Care restored the natural relief with pools and fens. The deep moat, which was an impregnable obstacle for many animals, was upgraded into a swampy edge zone with a dry edge. This natural transition from wet to dry areas is crucial for the bird, butterfly and dragonfly species that were once typical of this region.

In the meantime, the area functions as an important stepping stone between the heathlands in Dutch Brabant and heathlands in the Limburg Noorderkempen. Data from waarnemingen.be shows that special guests regularly visit these days. A total of 76 bird species find a resting and stopping place in the area. Among them are also rare bird species such as the Woodlark, Black-necked Grebe, Bullfinch, Kingfisher, Lesser Redpoll, Little Plover, Crossbill, Nutcracker, Sandpiper, Snipe and Oriole. Dragonflies, which rely on places with natural bank vegetation and transition zones from wet to dry vegetation, also benefit from the restoration works. With 32 different species, Schuilenswijer has even become a top area for this species group. Species that are rare in Flanders and that place high demands on water quality, such as the common dragonfly, woodland and meadow brook damselfly, can also be found there.
