Hoksent is one of the oldest settlements in this area. In the Liber Aureus this place was mentioned as Hoccascaute. The name is said to be derived from hugna (wild boar) and scauta (higher piece of sandy soil in swampy terrain). The Liber Aureus, although written later, mentioned that in 710 this area was given by one Berthilindis, a noble daughter, to Willibrord, who gave it to the Abbey of Echternach in 726. This Abbey still owned a late farm here until the 16th century.
