The Niedertor was the eastern of the four city gates of the medieval city fortifications of Ahrweiler. It was first mentioned in a document in 1297 along with the other three city gates (Ahrtor, Obertor and Adenbachtor). Because of its orientation towards the Rhine, it is also known as the Rhine Gate.

The 23.50 meter high Niedertor (also called "Rheintor") of Ahrweiler, the second highest of the four city gates that belonged to the former city fortifications of Ahrweiler, is a four-storey gate tower with a slate mansard roof and flanking towers. The gateway has a barrel vault and two portcullises. The patron saint of the gate and the entire Niederhut is St. Catherine of Alexandria; a wooden statue of the saint stands in a niche in the pedestrian passage.
