The newly built chapel in the vineyards of Walporzheim.
It will be a place of prayer and remembrance for the July 2021 flood.
The chapel is dedicated to Saint Donatus.

On July 15, 2023, the new St. Donatus flood chapel in the vineyards above Walporzheim was officially inaugurated by the Bishop of Trier, Stephan Ackermann. A figure of Saint Donatus was blessed along with the altar during the Liturgy of the Word.
Saint Donatus is the patron saint against storms, lightning, hail and fire. The chapel is intended to become the central memorial for the 134 victims who lost their lives in the flood disaster on July 14th/15th, 2021 in the Ahr Valley.
From the small platform, on which two rest areas were built next to the chapel, you have a beautiful view of the lower Ahr valley. In ideal weather conditions, the view even extends as far as the Westerwald...

The rainbow visible on the outside of the chapel above the map of the Ahr Valley is a biblical sign from the first book of Moses (also called Genesis): "This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you ... I will set my bow in the clouds."
