Beautiful city gate with city wall and city center. A visit worthwhile.

Architectural historical investigations have concluded that the Upper Gate was built between 1254 and 1267. Until the siege of Ahrweiler by troops of the Cologne Archbishop Rupert of the Palatinate in 1474, the Upper Gate was a three-wall gate, i.e. open to the city, as is the Bitzenturm not far away today. It was not until around 1500 that an inner wall was built into the Upper Gate; the seams can still be seen with the naked eye today. On the outside of the gate there is a pointed arch gate with a portcullis slot and a machicolation.

In addition to its stone outer walls, the tower only has a wooden interior over three floors, which can be reached via ladders. The only access to the gate is through the apartment and over the terrace of a private residential building on the north side of the gate, which is also historic, the Peter-Friedhofen-Haus.

The upper gate of the town of Ahrweiler, dating from the 13th to 15th centuries, is part of the former town fortifications and is located to the west of the wall. In urban usage, it is also known as the Gisemer Tor or Gisemer Porz or as the Walporzheimer Tor after the nearby deserted village of Gesem.
