Late Gothic church nestled in the middle of the village square. Formerly surrounded by an oval walled churchyard which disappeared in 1865; the churchyard wall was demolished in 1872 and initially replaced by an iron tube railing between ashlar posts and square piers with spherical ornament (now gone). The former cemetery is now part of the surrounding, cobbled church square.

Little scientific research has been carried out about the origins of the parish and the building history of the church. The name of the patron saint, the Holy Salvator, according to J. De Brouwer in any case indicates a very old age, rising to the beginning of Christianization in the 6th-7th century and is unique in the Land of Aalst. The mention of the church of the Holy Savior in the Vita Gudulae or biography of Saint Gudula (° 644, † 712) where the saint came to pray daily two miles from her home, the castle of Hamme-Herdersem, could possibly refer to Wiese church. The first clear proof of the existence of the church can be found in a document of 1105 in which bishop Odo van Kamerijk transfers several churches, including that of Wieze, to the newly founded abbey of Affligem, which thus acquired the right of patronage and part of the tithe. . Originally it was probably a domain church founded by the local lord.
