The Phoenix West steelworks in Dortmund has a long industrial history that is closely linked to the development of the city and the Ruhr region. The steelworks' beginnings date back to the late 19th century, when the industrial revolution in Germany reached its peak.The plant was originally founded by the Dortmund Union for the purpose of iron and steel production. It quickly became one of the most important industrial locations in the region, particularly because of its role in supplying steel for shipbuilding and the construction of railway lines, which significantly drove industrial expansion in Germany.Over the years, the factory has been modernized and expanded several times in order to keep pace with technological developments and increase production capacity. During the 20th century, however, the steel industry went through numerous crises that did not stop at Phoenix West. Structural change, global competition and declining demand ultimately led to the plant being shut down in the 1990s.The closure of the Phoenix West steelworks marked the end of an era, but at the same time the beginning of a new chapter in the history of the site. The city of Dortmund and various initiatives recognized the potential of the area and advocated the conversion and revitalization of the industrial monument.
