Karl Valentin Fountain (Viktualienmarkt)

Karl Valentin (real name Valentin Ludwig Fey; 1882 to 1948) was a word artist with a very special, unique way of expressing himself. Many of his quotes and sayings are still on everyone's lips and are often quoted on all possible and impossible occasions. We owe Karl Valentin wonderful sayings such as: A stranger is only a stranger in a foreign land or I would have liked to, but I didn't dare.Valentin's wit was aimed particularly at himself; his humor was supported by his tall, gaunt figure, which he emphasized with slapstick-like interludes. The pessimism and tragedy of his comedy were fed by the constant struggle with everyday things such as dealing with authorities and fellow human beings, which he also experienced himself.

I always think it's nice when fresh flowers are placed at the fountain in honor of Karl Valentin.

Since 1953, the water has been rippling around the Munich comedian and folk singer, who lived in Munich and the surrounding area from 1882 to 1948. Karl Valentin, who was born in Munich's Au, is particularly popular and known among Munich residents for his pieces together with Liesl Karlstadt. The Musäum im Isartor is dedicated to him and his stage partner. The fountain was designed by the sculptor Ernst Andreas Rauch and was presented in 1953 by his stage partner at the time, Liesl Karlstadt. The fountain is located in front of the Schrannenhalle.
