Karolinenplatz is a circular square in the Museum Quarter, created at the beginning of the 19th century as part of neoclassical urban planning. At its center stands the 29-meter-high obelisk, erected in 1833 at the request of King Ludwig I. It commemorates the 30,000 Bavarian soldiers who died in Napoleon's Russian campaign of 1812. The cast-iron obelisk is an important memorial to Bavarian history and lends Karolinenplatz its distinctive appearance as a historical memorial and transportation hub in Munich's city center.

The Karolinenplatz is the first place in Munich that takes up the motif of the Strahlplatz. The eye-catching obelisk in the middle of the square brings back memories of the obelisk on the Place de la Concorde in Paris, even if the two monoliths have practically nothing in common.
