The current mountain landscape was created 350 million years ago by a volcanic eruption in the primordial sea. The region around Welleringhausen is characterized by volcanic rocks known as "Welleringhausen volcaniclastites". These debris rocks come from a massive volcanic explosion that hurled lava and ash into the primordial sea. Remains of the volcano are visible today on the "Grotenberg" and "Kuhtenberg". The town of Welleringhausen itself has a history of over 1000 years. The rich mineral resources in the area could have influenced the settlement of people and the formation of the village.
