The Kahle Pön nature reserve extends around the Kahle Pön mountain between Düdinghausen and Usseln. Together with the Usselner Heide, it offers a varied mix of natural areas from beech stands, pastures and high heaths. Hochheiden have arisen in the past by the top vegetation layer being stripped to the mineral soil. These plagues were used as bedding for the animals and, together with the manure, spread back onto the fields. On the raw mineral soil, the acid and light-loving heather was able to assert itself particularly well against other plants, and heather areas made of heather, cranberry and grasses were created. Today, the heathland has become rare and must be permanently maintained as a cultural landscape. Because the heather does not tolerate shading from spruce, for example, and needs open mineral soils to reproduce. Today, maintenance is carried out using specially developed machines (plagg machines) and grazing with moorland swamps counteracts the progressive grassing and aging of the moorland. Naturally, the moorland is a very special natural beauty when it blooms in late summer!
Especially the dry, high heath areas exposed to the south offer a rare habitat. Rare bird species such as the tree and meadow pipit, red-backed shrike and shrike are found here. Even rare species of butterflies and grasshoppers love the open vegetation around the Usselner Heide and the mountain peak Kahle Pön.
The panoramic views are worth mentioning. The view from the Kalied is a very special highlight, because here the Medebacher Bay is literally completely at your feet. But the wide views from the summit cross of the Usselner Heide, from Kahle Pön or from the Graf-Stolberg-Hütte are also fascinating.

Nice view from the summit cross on Usseln and the mountains opposite.
There are shelters to rest above the cross and on the back of the mountain. Highly recommended in every season.

Rare landscape: high heath with few trees and bushes, but with blueberry fields and a magnificent view from the summit cross.

The nature reserve around Kahle Pön is very beautiful. From the highest point of the mountain, the Gifelkreuz, you have a beautiful view.

Worthwhile in every season. There are also two shelters on the mountain that are very suitable for resting.
