As one of the most important Catholic and Orthodox Marian pilgrimage sites in the region, the pilgrimage to Schönenberg has a long tradition. The pilgrimage route to Schönenberg Church leads - coming from Ellwangen - up a steep linden avenue past 15 octagonal rosary chapels that were built in 1733 and 1734 (including the larger Marian or Lourdes Chapel and the Joseph Chapel). The pilgrimage of the displaced persons in particular attracts thousands every year. Prominent pilgrims and keynote speakers on this occasion included Chancellors Konrad Adenauer and Helmut Kohl.
