The church was originally built as a Jesuit church. The plans for the baroque building were drawn up by the two Swiss Jesuits, Brother Jakob Amrhein and Father Guldimann. The foundation stone was laid in 1724 by Father Bovet. The gable shows the two order saints, Francis Xavier and Ignatius. The ceiling frescoes by Christoph Thomas Scheffler show the life of Mary. The church was consecrated "To the Immaculate Conception of Mary" on May 18, 1729. After Protestant Christians moved to the Ellwangen area and the denominations were given equal status, the church was converted into a Protestant parish church in 1806. The interior of the church was redesigned, and the baroque main altar and side altars were removed. A special feature is the Ecumenical Gate, which was opened in 1997. It provides a passage from the vestibule of the Roman Catholic Basilica of St. Vitus into the church space of the Evangelical City Church and is a symbol of ecumenism in the city.
