The main building of the baroque palace complex is under renovation. The armory in the gatehouse and the Kaisersaal are accessible to visitors. The location on a mountain spur that winds deep in the valley of the Schwarza, is outstanding. It is one of the residences of the princes of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt. Tip: From the lower part of the village Schwarzburg climb and enjoy the beautiful deciduous forest on the descent.

The castle Schwarzburg is a baroque, nowadays mostly ruinous castle in the eponymous municipality in the district Saalfeld-Rudolstadt, about 65 km southeast of the Thuringian capital Erfurt. Built on a ridge rising north-west into the valley of the Schwarza and steeply sloping on three sides, the former ancestral home of the Counts and later princes of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt dominates the region. As a result of large-scale demolition work in the period from 1940 to 1942 and the following decades of neglect, only a few buildings have been preserved in their substance, including the ruins of the main building, the arsenal and the open to the public emperor hall. Currently Schloss Schwarzburg is being renovated with much effort (as of 2012). Wikipedia
