The small market in front of the town hall originated as early as the 9th century and gained importance over time. A covered market hall, serving as a warehouse, shelter for merchants, and weighing hall for goods, is documented in the 14th century. It was located on the so-called "Place Palud."

Due to its large size, more space was soon needed, and following a fire in the Palud district, a new market hall, partly constructed of masonry, was added in 1415.
