The galloröm. vicus L. (today Gem. Lausanne, Quartier Vidy) was located on a bay bordered by two watercourses on the shores of Lake Geneva, which also determined the layout of the settlement. It extended on a natural, gently sloping terrace over a length of around 1 km and over an area of around 20 hectares. Its origin is closely related to the geogr. Linked location. L. formed a trading point at the connection between the Rhone basin and the Rhine plain, at the interface between the trade routes, which on the one hand Italy over the Gr. St. Bernhard with Gaul and the Rhine border, on the other hand connected the Mediterranean area through the Rhone Valley with Germania. The lake - which was used intensively as a traffic route, as the Corporation of Lake Geneva Skippers proves - played a decisive role in L.'s development. L.'s importance as a transshipment point and transit area is also confirmed by the fact that the archaeolog. Find material was partly imported and another part produced locally.
