Built in 1340, the tower is part of the fortifications of Lausanne. More precisely, the tower was built to defend the Ale district which is located in front of the Saint-Laurent gate outside the city walls1.
In 1890, the town decided to demolish the tower. This project raises strong popular opposition with the help of the heritage conservation movement. The tower was classified as a historic monument in 1900 and restored.
