In the 18th century, an embassy mail ran twice a week on the Berlin-Elsterwerda-Dresden-Vienna route. Later it was called Dragoon Post or Fahr- und Schnellpost. The Elsterwerda station was at the Rautenkranz, the city's finest inn, and in the post office opposite, today's town hall.
