Elsterwerda Castle appears to have been built at the end of the 12th or 13th century to secure the river crossing, the Niederstraße coming from Halle/Leipzig and leading towards the outskirts of the town, and an overland road that led from Großenhain towards Luckau. On March 14, 1211, Elsterwerda was mentioned for the first time in a document.
