The two lions from Bentheimer Tor are listed sandstone sculptures that once adorned Nordhorn's southern city gate, known as Bentheimer Tor. Its origin is dated to the 17th century. The lions have stood at the main entrance building since 2001.

The volunteer director of the Nordhorn Zoo, Arthur Griebenow, was the head of the city's vehicle fleet, responsible for the removal of sandstone troughs, which were unpopular at the time, and also the two lions. He diverted the transport to the landfill to the zoo and thus saved the lions from destruction. The sculptures were initially placed at the former zoo entrance on Heseper Weg and later at the newly created main entrance on Menkenweg. In 1993 they had to vacate their place again as part of the zoo's dismantling and almost went under again when the zoo's sponsoring association went bankrupt.[4]

In 1998, the lions were professionally restored on behalf of the zoo by the Nordhorn stonemasonry company Natursteinwerk Monser. The exposed concrete bases were replaced with Bentheimer sandstone.

The lions have been standing in front of the entrance building on the expansion area of the Nordhorn Zoo since 2001.
