A nice smaller zoo with over 100 different animal species, also two forest nature trails and a petting zoo. A great destination for children!

Tierpark Gettorf has been run as a family business for 50 years now in the 3rd generation. It all began more than 50 years ago with a private hobby on the site of a former gravel pit. The trained farmer Karl-Heinz Bumann, who was successful as a transport company after the war, was able to put a long-held wish into practice here and set up a small private wildlife park. Ornamental fowl, sheep, goats and some deer were the first inhabitants of the zoo. Over time, the number of animals and species kept grew and gradually the first exotic animals came to Gettorf.

In May 1968, Karl-Heinz Bumann decided to open his park regularly to visitors. At this point in time, the original home animal park with exotic sprinklings then became the famous monkey park, because this group of animals still characterizes the image of the animal park today. The conversion of the former pheasant house into a monkey house was the first step on this path. Today Gettorf is home to numerous monkeys from over 10 species, from the squirrel-sized emperor tamarin to the mighty chimpanzee.

The rest of the animals in Gettorf also became more and more exotic over time. In addition to monkeys and tropical birds, zebras, antelopes, flamingos, rheas and tapirs were soon to be observed here. To this day, the animal park, which is now privately run by the children of the founder in the second generation, is sticking to its intention of bringing visitors closer to a particularly diverse exotic animal life in the midst of well-kept facilities. With the entry of Jörg Bumann into the zoo management at the beginning of 2014, the 3rd generation is now represented in the zoo.

In the meantime, more than 10 trained zoo keepers take care of the diverse and demanding stock of the park, plus our trainees and animal care assistants. Two gardeners take care of the extensive green areas, our five craftsmen ensure that all technical systems remain in good condition and that new systems are built, and the cashiers ensure that the park runs smoothly even on busy days. Three biologists manage the animal population, look after the zoo school and, together with our team of zoo guides, carry out the feeding and children's birthday parties.

After the crested macaques had moved, the conversion work in the front area of the monkey house began in autumn 2018. This construction work is now largely complete and the monkey house presents itself in new splendor.

The wall tiles, which had become unsightly over time and no longer corresponded to the current image of modern animal husbandry, were removed and replaced by an attractive landscape of artificial rocks. The lighting concept has been completely revised so that visitors can now expect friendly, bright animal enclosures.

Two groups of marmosets move into the completely renovated monkey house as new residents.
