The historic locks were completed with the Eider Canal in 1784.
All locks (with the exception of the Rendsburg lock, which has only one chamber) are identical in construction with a main chamber, the ship lock, which is 35 m long and 7.8 m wide, and a side chamber, the free lock, which is 5 m wide.
The structures for regulating the water level based on the Dutch model are a significant engineering achievement.

All of the locks had paths with bascule bridges based on the Dutch model, except for the Rathmannsdorf lock.
The Klein Königsförde lock system was restored in 1988. The impressive Dutch bascule bridge was reconstructed in its original condition and fully functional.
Today the Klein Königsförde lock is a listed cultural monument.
