The urban settlement in the valley, conveniently located on the trade routes, also developed well and became a "free imperial city" in 1361. There were tensions between the monastery and the city. In the 17th century, the monastery and church were rebuilt after they had been destroyed. In 1802/03 Stiftsstadt and Reichsstadt became part of Bavaria.

On the separate pillar in the center of the fountain, two figures in swimwear stand with outstretched arms next to an apple tree. Below is a wreath around the pillar on which several small birds stand. Water flows out of nozzles from this ring. The new fountain was met with mixed response from the population.
