    Hildegard Fountain on Hildegardplatz, Kempten
Abbey and town - for centuries this led to disputes in the double town of Kempten. Hildegard, the wife of Charlemagne, supported the monastery, which was founded under Abbot Audogar in the middle of the 8th century. The urban settlement in the valley, conveniently located on the trade routes, also developed well and became a "free imperial city" in 1361. There were tensions between the monastery and the city. In the 17th century, the monastery and church were rebuilt after they had been destroyed. In 1802/03 Stiftsstadt and Reichsstadt became part of Bavaria.

        Hildegard fountain

One of the first fountains was placed on the square in 1783. He had a cymbal made of metal. It was dismantled around 1800 and set up on a farm in a neighboring community. It was replaced by a new fountain with a stone basin. This was replaced in 1847 by a neo-Gothic, cast-iron fountain with a statue of church founder Hildegard. The individual elements were originally colorfully painted. In August 1950 this was also removed. The well was in poor condition and repairing it would have been too expensive.

In 2013, after the square had been redesigned, a fountain designed by Christiane Sandler was installed. The round shell limestone basin is decorated with six animals from which water flows at the push of a button. The animals are a salamander, frog, grass snake, trout, carp and crab. On the separate pillar in the center of the fountain, two figures in swimwear stand with outstretched arms next to an apple tree. Below is a wreath around the pillar on which several small birds stand. Water flows out of nozzles from this ring. The new fountain was met with mixed response from the population. The figures with swimwear, the style of the 1980s and the lack of reference to Hildegardplatz were criticized.
