The Sint-Annatunnel or pedestrian tunnel was constructed in 1931-1931 as a connection between the left and right banks. The access and ventilation buildings on both banks of the Scheldt were designed by E. Van Averbeke. Full description and history at inventaris.onroerenderfgoed.be/erfgoedobjecten/216718

As the information board (see photos) indicates, the tunnel, including both entrance buildings and the entire original technical equipment, has been protected as a monument since 1997.

Before the tunnel was built, commuters took one of the two ferries across the Scheldt, the Land Van Waas train boat or the Sint-Annekesboot aan het Steen.
These boats later reappeared on the scene after the Germans exploded the entrance building on the Left Bank in 1944 and the tunnel became unusable for several years.
