The Groenplaats is located in the historical centre of Antwerp and is one of the most famous squares in Antwerp. Tourists who visit Antwerp to shop almost automatically end up on this rectangular square. The Groenplaats is an important link on the route between the Grote Markt, the Handschoenmarkt and the Suikerrui. Some visitors sit down on one of the benches on the square, sit around the statue of Peter Paul Rubens or take a seat on one of the terraces that can be found around the Groenplaats.
The Groenplaats was a cemetery that belonged to the Cathedral of Our Lady since the Middle Ages. It was not until the end of the eighteenth century that this cemetery was transformed into a square. This happened after Emperor Joseph II forbade the use of cemeteries within the city walls.
