"The railway from Schwelm to Witten was not built by the Reichsbahn for the direct purpose of transporting coal. Rather, it was to be part of a new connection between Dortmund and Cologne. Nevertheless, it acquired a certain importance for the transport of coal, at least insofar as it was opened at the same time Neuwuelfingsburg colliery was built between 1911 and 1934.

Ultimately, the railway never achieved the importance originally expected. So it was abandoned after just under 50 years. The railway line was closed in 1980."

The Witten–Schwelm railway line (also known as the Elbschetalbahn) is a railway line in the Ennepe-Ruhr district in the southeastern Ruhr area that is now largely closed and only the end sections are still in operation.

The 4.6-kilometer-long, double-track and now electrified section from Witten Hauptbahnhof to Wengern Ost is now only used for freight traffic.

The 17-kilometer-long, single-track section from Witten-Höhe to Schwelm was intended to be part of a relief route from the Ruhr area towards Cologne, (...) but this was not possible due to the events of the First World War.

Work on the line began in 1911 (...) and completion (dragged) until 1934. On October 4, 1926, the Deutsche Reichsbahn opened the section from Witten Hauptbahnhof via Witten-Höhe to Wengern Ost with a connection to the Ruhrtalbahn from Hattingen to Hagen. It then served exclusively for freight traffic for around ten years. (...)

From 1934 to 1939, 23 passenger trains ran on the route every day, including five express trains. There was also a considerable amount of freight traffic.

During the Second World War, the Silscheder Tunnel, Klosterholz Tunnel, Schwelm Tunnel and Linderhauser Tunnel (...) were used as underground relocations for armaments, where forced laborers had to manufacture weapons.

The railway was resumed after 1945; however, traffic declined continuously in the post-war period. As a result, passenger traffic was stopped on the middle section from Witten-Höhe via Wengern West and Albringhausen to Gevelsberg West on November 30, 1979. On January 14, 1980, this section was closed to all traffic and closed on January 1, 1983. (...)

The northern part of the route is now only used for freight traffic, while the southern section through the 945-meter-long Linderhauser Tunnel from Gevelsberg to Schwelm creates a connection between the Düsseldorf-Derendorf–Dortmund Süd railway line and the Elberfeld–Dortmund railway line for the S-Bahn lines S 8 and S 9 of the S-Bahn Rhein-Ruhr.

There are plans to create a railway cycle path on the disused section. (...)
Part of the connection is the section of the From-Ruhr-to-Ruhr cycle path that is still to be expanded. The section from Witten to Albringhausen was completed in August 2017.
